The match that everyone in the crowd was anticipating was the debut fight for former Tampa Bay Buccanner Marcus Jones. The crowd went absolutely nuts when the announces introduced Marcus Jones. I remember seeing Jones play on TV and I remember him being a monster with long dreads. When Marcus Jones entered the ring I was shocked at what I saw.

Marcus Jones has obviously been getting good training because he made quick work of his opponent who tapped out after he was taken to the ground an pummeled for 58 seconds. Marcus Jones was so excited about his victory you would have thought he had won the superbowl. He thanked his trainers at Gracie Tampa which I have learned is one of the premier places to be trained in the art of MMA.

The talent may be as good as it was under White, but the polished experience wasn’t there.

Consider what Bob Stoops did in his first recruiting season when he added QB Josh Heupel (Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year), LB Torrance Marshall (Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year) and WR Antwone Savage (Big 12 Freshman of the Year). Add to that a 2000 recruiting class that consists of 23 high school prospects--headed by OL Wes Sims, DB Vernon Maxwell, RB Renaldo Works and WR Antonio Perkins--and five junior-college players.

My initial thought was " I feel sorry for the guy that has to get into the ring with Jones" When Jone's opponent entered the ring I felt that he had no chance simply because he did not have the size or power of Jones.

Blount Suspended from Ducks

Blount, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound transfer from East Mississippi CC, declined to comment on the matter. He burst onto the scene in Eugene last fall, combining a bruising running style that earned him the nickname "Blount Force Trauma" with a knack for hurdling smaller defenders on his way to a school-record 17 rushing touchdowns. A ploy to make roster room in a recruit's mind? A feint. A mis-direction play. Suspend Blount with every intention to bring him back into the fold, and in the meantime, have that spot unfilled to add allure to the undecided 5 star recruit out there? hmmmm. It is UofO, and nothing is off that table when it comes to ethics and fair play. When the outgoing University President, the mega booster, and the degreeless AD can finesse whoever the incoming President will be in athletic department hires and choices, I can see Blount being the unwitting pawn in a greater gaming of the system.

With the seemingly endless results that pass our eyes at the start of every tournament, it’s all too easy to let many an emerging name pass you by. But when Julia Goerges posted a first-round 6-4 4-6 7-6(4) victory over Virginie Razzano, something made us sit up and take notice.

Goerges, Goerges…where have we heard that name before? And then it clicked – the tight scoreline was the giveaway. Julia Goerges, the German world No.115, is the feisty little upstart who refused to say die against Katerina Srebotnik at Wimbledon last year, winning the third set of their first-round tie 16-14.

Grandmas Marathon

A sea of runners took off at the start of Grandma's Marathon Saturday morning in Two Harbors, Minn. There were 9,747 runners scheduled to run the 26.2-mile race.

Wesly Ngetich is just the fourth man -- and the first non-American male -- to win Grandma's Marathon twice.

DULUTH -- It was the gamble Saturday that would either turn Wesly Ngetich into a Grandma's Marathon legend or into an also-ran for the second consecutive year.

With the bright sun beating down on his head and the burden of last year's Grandma's collapse weighted on his shoulders, Ngetich broke away from a pack of fellow Kenyans at the 17-mile mark and won his second Grandma's Marathon in three years.

Gary Papa of Wayne

Gary Papa is one of the most well-recognized current residents of Wayne. He joined as an anchor of WPVI's Action News on April 15, 1981 and continues as sports anchor to this day.

Papa is also well known locally as being master of ceremonies for various local events, such as the Christmas Tree lighting at Wayne Station. Papa was also a contributor for the Station's restoration in the early 2000s.

Lakers celebrate another title with downtown parade

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- More than a half-million fans celebrated the Los Angeles Lakers' second straight NBA championship Monday as Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant promised to do it all again next year. Lakers Parade.

"Three-peat, three-peat, three-peat," rap master Shaq exhorted a purple-and-gold throng massed outside Staples Center in a rousing hip-hop performance that capped the festivities.

Bryant put it another way: "We're going to get another one next year, again -- back to back to back."

Baking heat couldn't keep fans from flocking downtown to celebrate the Lakers' out-of-town victory over the Eastern Conference-champion Philadelphia 76ers.

An estimated 550,000 people turned out for the parade and rally, according to police spokesman Lt. Horace Frank. Lakers Parade.

Tim Sylvia vs. Ray Mercer just got stranger

The main event for Adrenaline MMA III will feature a boxing match between former boxing heavyweight champion Ray Mercer and former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia.

Most fans and observers have deemed such an event a 'freak show' and it just got a lot more freaky. Sylvia and Mercer will box in an MMA-styled cage.

This fight was originally scheduled to take place in New Jersey but the state athletic commission refused to sanction the bout, that is when Monte Cox decided to move the fight to a place where there is no regulatory body, Alabama.

For those keeping track, Tim Sylvia, a MMA fighter who has never professionally boxed, will fight a forty eight year old boxer, in a state with no regulatory body and in a cage.

Grid set for 24 Hours of Le Mans, Peugeot starting 1-2-3

As we reported yesterday, Peugeot was clearly the fastest in qualifying for this weekend's running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The record-setting runs of all three 908 HDi diesel-powered LMP1 cars places Peugeot's entire field of entries 1-2-3 on the starting grid. That's impressive considering two of Peugeot's car crashed during the past two weeks of practice. Audi is hoping that its team's experience, quicker pit stops and more fuel efficient R10 LMP1 cars will eventually carry it past the Peugeots, despite starting fourth, fifth and seventh on the 55-car grid. And thanks to the speed of Lola Aston Martin driver Stefan Mücke whose petrol-powered car earned the sixth spot on the starting grid, not all the front runners will be diesel-powered.

As for classes other than LMP1, the next fastest LMP2 class was dominated by the Porsche Spyders not surprisingly, while LMGT1 is being led by the #63 Corvette Racing C6.R. The Corvettes will be chased this year by the particularly fast #50 Larbre Competition Saleen S7 and some slower but determined Aston Martin DBR9s from Aston Martin Racing. Finally, LMGT2 will be another great battle between Porsches and Ferraris, with the #76 Imsa Performance Matmut Porsche 911 GT3 RSR on pole for the class. Remember the amazing GT2 class finish of last year's race between Flying Lizard's Jorg Bergmeister in a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR and Risi Competizione's Jaime Melo in a Ferrari 430GT? Dana White's Tirade - Indicative of Something Deeper??

Much has been made recently of UFC President Dana White's recent attack on MMA reported Loretta Hunt. Hunt wrote an article questioning the UFC's policy of banning certain management types from access at the events, wondering if the company's ulterior motives were not to divide fighters from their own advisors. White appeared in a curse ridden tirade on You Tube to refute the article, but wound up embroiled in further questions about his management style.

One insider commented 'This is par for the course for White. It has been his style from the very beginning. From the first episode of 'The Ultimate Fighter' where his status as a semi celebrity started, he behaved this way. Foul language became a part of his personality. What no one realizes is that now that their growth has seen them become mainstream, the next level of growth will be held back by his vulgar approach. What he calls brash and 'tell it like it is' really comes across as unintelligent to a vast number of people. Could you imagine NFL or NBA executives talking that way?



For years no one in the press called White on his tirades. What is worse is that the UFC owners allowed it as well. The company has learned to act with impunity, to feel they can do whatever they want and no one can do anything about it. As other MMA companies have failed, this was used at further justification that absolutely everything the UFC does is right.

This brings to light two other recent actions by UFC, likely under the direction of White, that show complete disdain for fans and press alike. What is more important is that these involve ticket sales and main event announcements, so they are really in ways more of a direct spit in the face of their strongest fans that just a foul mouthed attack on someone who has proven themselves to be a good reporter and a huge benefit for MMA as it grows.

Our insider continues 'Not too many people go to the Savage Science website, but their reporter Lyman Hoyt really took a solid look at the circumstances around Mir-Lesnar and Evans- Rampage main event announcements. Mir had surgery on February 29th to repair the knee that would cause the postponement of the UFC 98 main event. On March 2nd the main event was announced for UFC 98, and tickets went on sale on March 5th. The official postponement announcement of the match isn’t made until March 7th. Later on, Rampage and Evans were in the ring to hype their match, and much was made of Rampage's body language, that he didn’t want to fight, and then he was lambasted for pulling out of the fight. Perhaps Rampage was being asked to do something for the company's ticket sales, despite him knowing there was no way he can fight?'

The criticism the company has received for White's tirade is indicative of the style of management the UFC has assumed. No one can tell them what to do, and they don’t really care about anyone else's opinion or well being. This latest incident is just the first time anyone has been willing to call them on what is a long history of this type of behavior.
